We use arc as shorthand for the terms volcanic arc or magmatic zone.
The distance between the plate boundary and magmatic zone has a width of between 100 and 250 km.
Crustal shortening occurs across the entire magmatic zone, which in turn has an effect on the magmatism itself.
The rising melts in the area of the magmatic zone cause a high geothermal gradi- ent with heat flow values of 100 milliwatt per m2 or more (Fig. 7.3).
